Why it stands out
The 2016 BMW 3 Series stands out as a well-rounded luxury sport sedan that blends performance, efficiency, and everyday usability. In this generation, BMW offered a wide range of powertrains, including four-cylinder, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and six-cylinder options, along with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations in Canada. That variety is a major part of its appeal: buyers could choose a version that leaned towards fuel economy, strong acceleration, or a more premium driving experience without leaving the 3 Series family.
For 2016 specifically, the 330i used BMW’s newer B48 four-cylinder, the 330e plug-in hybrid debuted with up to 23 kilometres of electric range, and the 340i adopted the B58 inline-six with 322 horsepower. BMW also offered the 328d diesel, which could burn as little as 6.8 litres per 100 kilometres combined, and the M3 lineup continued with serious performance and rear-wheel drive. The cabin remained sober, business-like, and luxurious, though it was still a little tight in the back, and the car’s safety and infotainment equipment were competitive for the class.
There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. The 3 Series is still a complex vehicle, so maintenance can be significant, and the buying guide notes that these cars are not cheap to buy. Even so, the 2016 model’s mix of sharp handling, premium feel, and broad choice of engines and body styles makes it one of the more distinctive used luxury cars for shoppers who want something engaging as well as practical.

This was a car in good condition that may need attention to tires. The body and interior are in excellent condition. Mileage and price make this a good deal.

Is the 2016 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Generally — the 2016 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.2/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners most often praise its safety, build quality, and enjoyable driving experience, and many also like the comfort and performance that come through in different driving modes. In practical terms, that lines up well if you want a premium sport sedan that still feels polished and engaging for everyday use. With 26.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is a decent amount of market value to work with.
Is the 2016 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback also points to a car that feels reliable and well built, with many drivers describing it as dependable and enjoyable over time. That said, some owners noted frustration with missing expected features, so you should still check equipment carefully on any used example. For long-term ownership, the main risk is less about basic satisfaction and more about making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained properly and matches your expectations.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 BMW 3 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile examples.
- Deal availability: 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 146 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 19.99% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $13,584 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 BMW 3 Series' resale value?
The current average of $13,584 CAD sits slightly below last year's $16,977 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you purchase at a strong price, you reduce the risk of taking a bigger hit later. The fact that the model still draws solid owner satisfaction should help keep demand steady among used luxury-sedan shoppers.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 19.99% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 is a sensible pick if you want a well-liked 3 Series at a softer price point and you value the balance of comfort, performance, and premium feel. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years to see whether a lower asking price or better equipment mix gives you more value for your budget.
