Why it stands out
The 2014 Ford Explorer stands out as part of the fifth generation, when Ford moved the model onto the D4 platform and turned it into a more crossover-like SUV. That shift gave it a different character from earlier, truck-based Explorers, with front-wheel drive behaviour in most cases and all-wheel drive available as a side benefit. It also marked the Explorer’s move into a more modern role, with Ford’s SYNC infotainment system and a broader range of comfort and convenience features than earlier generations offered.
For buyers, the 2014 Ford Explorer’s appeal lies in its mix of space, capability, and equipment. It could be had with up to seven-passenger seating, and many shoppers chose a six-passenger layout with second-row captain’s chairs. AWD versions added hill descent control, hill descent assist, and a terrain mode system with four different settings, while the cabin could be fitted with heated and ventilated front seats, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and other luxuries. The model also offered a 290-horsepower 3.5-litre V6, and later fifth-generation Explorers could be found with a 2.0-litre EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder or a 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 twin-turbo, showing how broad the range had become.
That said, the 2014 Ford Explorer was not the class leader in every respect. The source notes that the fifth-generation Explorer rarely ranked at the top of its class in any one area, and that rivals were often more efficient, more reliable, more spacious, or more luxurious. Reliability was also a weak point for this generation overall, with complaints about electrical system issues. Even so, the 2014 Explorer remains attractive because it combines a practical cabin, available all-wheel drive, and a more modern driving feel than the older body-on-frame Explorers.

The Ford Explorer is the best vehicle I have ever owned . I like to buy american also looked at the Lincoln MKX which was noisy in comparison . I believe Lincoln has become an over priced Ford . Go with the Explorer if you are looking for an SUV

After driving the new Ford Explorer sport for the first time about six months ago, it has to be the best SUV on the market. The performance of the 3.5L twin turbo 365 HP engine is second to none. The cab is nicely appointed, very comfortable and outside sound is minimal. The styling is low and lean and with the all black grill the overall appeal is outstanding. At 16MPG city, the gas mileage could be improved a bit, but you have to give up MPG for that kind of HP. This SUV is great to drive as you feel sturdy and solid in it, yet the nimble steering and responsive suspension make you feel in complete control. It will get wherever you want to go as fast as you want to go there, but keeps you in control and can also get you out of any situation needed.
