CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Ford Explorer

Summary
With 83 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,036 CAD, 22.9% of 2014 Ford Explorer listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Ford Explorer 4.5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Ford Explorer stands out as part of the fifth-generation Explorer, which moved the model away from its earlier truck-based roots and into a crossover-style design. That change gave it a more car-like character while still keeping the Explorer’s familiar sense of size and utility. It also brought modern infotainment systems to the nameplate, along with available comforts such as heated and ventilated front seats, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and other luxury touches. For buyers, that makes the 2014 Explorer appealing as a roomy, family-oriented SUV that feels more contemporary than older versions of the model.
It is also notable for the breadth of its equipment. Ford offered safety features such as BLIS blind spot information system with rear cross traffic alert, forward-collision warning with emergency braking, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, active parking assist, and rain-sensing wipers. AWD versions also included hill descent control, hill descent assist, and a terrain mode system with four different settings. At the same time, the 2014 Explorer was not class-leading in every respect: the source notes that it was less efficient and less reliable than rivals such as the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander, and that it did not rank at the top of its class in any one area. Still, its mix of space, features, and broad capability helps explain why it remains attractive to used buyers.

The Ford Explorer is the best vehicle I have ever owned . I like to buy american also looked at the Lincoln MKX which was noisy in comparison . I believe Lincoln has become an over priced Ford . Go with the Explorer if you are looking for an SUV

After driving the new Ford Explorer sport for the first time about six months ago, it has to be the best SUV on the market. The performance of the 3.5L twin turbo 365 HP engine is second to none. The cab is nicely appointed, very comfortable and outside sound is minimal. The styling is low and lean and with the all black grill the overall appeal is outstanding. At 16MPG city, the gas mileage could be improved a bit, but you have to give up MPG for that kind of HP. This SUV is great to drive as you feel sturdy and solid in it, yet the nimble steering and responsive suspension make you feel in complete control. It will get wherever you want to go as fast as you want to go there, but keeps you in control and can also get you out of any situation needed.

| Year-Round High | $13,131 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,643 CAD |

Prices have softened 13.93% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 83 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare before you decide.
Is the 2014 Ford Explorer a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Ford Explorer earns a 4.5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners commonly praise its comfort, space, and performance, and many also like its stylish design and value for money. For you, that makes it a sensible fit if you want a roomy, family-oriented SUV with a more contemporary feel and broad everyday usefulness. With 18.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a vehicle that many people find dependable in day-to-day use, with comfort and performance standing out as recurring strengths. At the same time, some owners mention maintenance costs and concerns on higher-mileage examples, so you should pay close attention to service history and overall condition. For used buyers, that means the long-term ownership risk is manageable if you choose carefully and verify how the vehicle has been maintained.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Ford Explorer?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to compare listings and wait for the right example.
- Deal availability: 18.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 83 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.93% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $10,020 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $10,021 CAD sits slightly below last year's $11,643 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the vehicle more attractive to you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it also means resale expectations should stay realistic unless the vehicle is especially well kept or unusually well equipped. Because the current average is near the low end of the yearly range, a clean example bought well now may be easier to move later if demand stays steady.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 18.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.93% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want a used Explorer with a strong owner satisfaction profile and a price that has already softened, the 2014 is worth serious consideration. If your priority is stretching your budget as far as possible, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the best-priced, best-maintained example rather than the badge year alone.
