(7 reviews)This car was the fastest car I have ever owned. Mine was black and was a 4 speed, but it had an overdrive stick that made each of the 4 gears have a high and low. It was like having 8 speeds. AND had a turbo charger. It could out run a Corvette, yes I raced one...It passed me when I got out of 3rd, and the 'vettes 4bbrs kicked in.
I've had my 84 Colt GTS twin-stick turbo since 1985 and it is a killer auto-cross car. I can't count the number of trophies I've collected with it. The twin-stick transmission means you can always find the right gear and the power to weight ratio is great. I put a 1 1/8" sway bar under the rear and it handles like it is on rails. The 1984 didn't have a water cooled turbo, but you can add the plumbing from a 1985 and get it.
I used to have a 84 Dodge Colt back in the late 80's. It had the 1.6 liter 4 cyl with turbo and 4x2 spd twin stick manual. That car would move. I think I got it up to 110 mph once. Only bad part about the car was the turbo went out at 70,000.
There was nothing to not like about the Colt DL except the color and no A/C, both mentioned earlier, and both my doing. I loved the twin-stick transmission whign I heard was discontinued because too many dim bulbs out there didn't have the brains to use the clutch when using the econ/power stick so it would ruin the transmission. I wouldn't use the 8 speed mode much except when I was carrying a heavy load such as a six-pack of Coke and a couple of scripts I would go through the entire range of the eight if my passenger was a newbie, but mostly just left it in Econ except when I was entering or exiting a highway. As I was driving 200+ miles a day, and the oil changes were recommended at 3,000 miles, I would just book an appointment with the service manager for two weeks or so. I swear you could drive that car down a flight of stairs and nothing would happen. It had 98,000 miles on it when I sold it to a friends daughter. She went from High School through college.in it and apart from a few dings and dents due to parking problem on campus, it drove as well. I'm not going to say the Colt tugs at the heartstrings like my 74 Super Beetle (see review) does, but between me and Melissa we put on a total of almost 175,000 miles without a single abnormal issue. The only reason it was gotten rid of was because it was T-Boned by a CJ 5 and the KBB in 1997 wasn't all that high. I think the Colt to her was like the bug was to me.
I own 3 of them. 2 black and one grey. all are stock and they run like a a scalded dog. 35+ mpg and thats not having it in economy! They are hard to find parts for and they arent really worth a lot to anyone out there. Its a shame because they are unique little cars that were made ONE year in that body style. 1984 Dodge Colt GTS Turbo 1.6L, 8 speed......... 1900 lbs dry.
