In 2024, the Canadian automotive market had its best year so far this decade. While the total new vehicle sales figure of 1.86 million units reported by Desrosiers Automotive Consultants is an increase of 8.2 percent versus 2023, it’s still slightly off the average from pre-pandemic years and a far cry from the record of 2 million units seen in 2017.
Within those figures, there are some interesting trends. Statistics Canada reports that zero-emission vehicles — meaning plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) — accounted for 13.8 percent of units sold last year, with Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia, and the territories leading the charge.
Cars also continue their downward trend, with sedans, hatchbacks, and wagons now being just 13.4 percent of overall sales versus the 86.6 percent going to trucks, SUVs, and minivans. Among those cars, the Canadian-built Honda Civic reclaims its title as the best-selling car in Canada in 2024. Meanwhile, the Toyota Corolla — which held the top spot for the past two years — doesn’t even crack the top 10 best-selling cars in Canada in 2024.
As usual, pick-up trucks and compact SUVs dominate the rest of this list of Canada’s top-selling automotive nameplates in 2024, which you’ll find laid out in detail below.
The Best-Selling Cars in Canada in 2024
- Ford F-Series
- Toyota RAV4
- GMC Sierra
- RAM Pickup
- Honda CR-V
- Chevrolet Silverado
- Nissan Rogue
- Honda Civic
- Ford Escape
- Hyundai Kona
1. Ford F-Series: 133,857
Ford’s F-Series trucks maintained their vice grip on Canada’s automotive market once again in 2024. The F-Series line-up — which includes the Ford F-150 half-ton pickup as well as Ford Super Duty trucks — has more than 10,000 additional units sold year over year and clears more than 50,000 units over its next-closest competitor. 2024 marked the 59th consecutive year in which the Ford F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada.

2. Toyota RAV4: 77,556
While a new generation of Toyota RAV4 is on the way for 2026, the fifth-generation model continues to be a sales tour de force for the automaker. For 2024, the Canadian-built RAV4 moved up to second place on the sales charts and kept its title as the best-selling vehicle in the country that’s not a pickup. This marks a 4 percent increase over 2023 and the RAV4’s best sales year ever in Canada. It will be very interesting to see whether Toyota can maintain this momentum through the new generation’s launch in 2025.

3. GMC Sierra: 59,912
With sales roughly on par year over year, the GMC Sierra slid into third place on the list of the top 10 best-selling vehicles in Canada in 2024. Like the Ford and Ram statistics, sales of the full Sierra line count here, including heavy-duty trucks. As usual, though, if sales figures for the Sierra and the related Chevrolet Silverado were tallied together, their combined sales would put them firmly into second place.

4. Ram Pickup: 56,992
Ram saw the biggest losses among pick-up nameplates in 2024 with a sales drop across its full line of 24 percent. The piece of the puzzle we don’t have is if Ram made more money on each of its sales to make up for the volume loss. The brand has discontinued its more affordable models in the past year, which has effectively caused a pivot into more premium territory. Whether that strategy will prove profitable is yet to be seen.

5. Honda CR-V: 55,363
2024 was a banner year for another Canadian-built nameplate. The Honda CR-V, which is assembled in Alliston, Ontario, saw sales increase 6 percent, lifting it one spot on this list to land in fifth place. There’s still plenty of room for growth, though, with the CR-V lagging more than 20,000 units behind its closest competitor, the Toyota RAV4.

6. Chevrolet Silverado: 52,078
Sales on the Chevrolet Silverado full-size and heavy-duty truck line remained steady in 2024, but that wasn’t enough to keep the nameplate in the top five. As noted above, if the GMC Sierra’s sales figures were combined with the Silverado’s, these related trucks would share second place on this list. As a result of Ram’s decline, the GM truck lines saw a slight market share increase despite sharing a combined 1 percent sales drop.

7. Nissan Rogue: 32,737
Nissan may not be booming on a global scale, but the Nissan Rogue compact SUV is proving to be a sales winner here in Canada. In 2024, it posted a 23 percent sales increase that’s was good enough to land it in seventh place overall. That’s on top of a 32 percent increase year over year the Rogue enjoyed in 2023. Its three-cylinder engine is the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid in its class, which seems to be resonating with Canadians.

8. Honda Civic: 31,774
The Alliston, Ont.-built Honda Civic has recovered from a two-year slump to regain the title of Canada’s best-selling car. Plus, for 2024, the Civic is the only vehicle with a car body style to make it onto this list. That’s not to say everything is rosy for the Civic: sales for the nameplate have dropped by roughly half in the past 15 years. But as it stands relative to current trends — and with many looking closely at our purchases and choosing to buy Canadian made — things are looking up for Honda’s compact sedan and hatchback.

9. Ford Escape: 30,996
This is a strange one. The Ford Escape hasn’t been on Canada’s top 10 leaderboard in years. Recently, it’s been sharing the spotlight and some market share with Ford’s other compact SUV, the more rugged Bronco Sport. It’s also strongly rumoured that the Escape is set to be discontinued to make way for future electrified vehicles, possibly as early as 2026. With this resurgence in sales and automakers revising their electrification strategies, this story will be one to watch.

10. Hyundai Kona: 30,020
Subcompact SUVs are seeing some of the fastest sales growth in the industry, and the Hyundai Kona leads the way. Redesigned for the 2024 model year with a futuristic look and improved technology, the Kona saw a 33.8 percent sales increase over 2023, which is good enough to nudge it into Canada’s top 10 vehicles by sales overall. In doing so, it bumped another Hyundai vehicle off this list, the Tucson compact SUV, which it beat out by less than 200 units.
