What does it mean when you your car will crank but wont start

Simple things to check: try spraying some starting fluid in the throttle body. If the engine starts, you have a fuel supply problem. (Filter, fuel pump, injectors). If it doesn't start, you have an electrical problem: coil(s), crank sensor, blown ignition system.
