Question type: Maintenance & Repair

3.8l engine, changed lilfters and oil pressure started going to zero. car had
a issue before of having low oil pressure but not like this.
Pulled the oil pump out found that the limiter/regulator has a chip off the
chrome on the piston and the cylinder was scored up inside apparantly from
the chipped chrome.

2 Questions.

1. Can i hone out the cylinder without dropping oil pressure to remove
scratches or do i ahve to replace the whole timing chain cover.

2. The inner geo-gear has a timing dimple on it.  What do i align that dimple
up to??

Before someone tells me its my bearings, do you go and pull a motor out befor checking the oil pump and all related parts? No you dont'. Secondly 100k miles the bearings should be fine. No reason for them to be worn out. this is not a high mileage engine. Third the limiter piston was stuck. SO that diagnostically would mean that there would be a open overflow hole in there to kill oil pressure once it thinned out after warming.

Sounds like you have it figured out so no need for an answer.

Honeing out a cylinder will do nothing to oil pressure one way or the other.
