car factory rim is16 and I bought some 17inch Pontiac chrome rims to look more sporty. The car is a Pontiac sunfire is there a adapter to line up lug bolt pattern.

Maybe, but a tire store can tell you. They should also tell you how a change like this will affect other things on the car. Tire size will change and there may be clearance issues with the car body, braking and suspension systems may need to be considered, and even a simple thing like your speedometer will likely need to be altered. You can't just slap 'em on these days.
