my 1996 ranger 4 liter 6 cyl wont go over 25 mph. give it all the throttle but wont go. where to start?

when in park it will rev up. put in gear and no matter how heavy on the foot it wont rev
up,spit and sputter, i can walk faster and its less imbearising. any ideas?

How long since its last major tune up? ( plugs, plug wires, air filter, fuel filter ect). Has it been sitting for a while or is it a daily driver that just started acting this way?
