Need to replace starter wires. How much wiring.

I got home, went in the hose. 5 minutes later I went outside and saw smoke
coming from under my hood and smelt electrical burning.. I Took terminals off
battery. THe starter wires were all melted.THe wire bolt was loose in the
starter. I could shake it around. How much wiring do I have to replace and what
more should I do .

Remove them and see if any other wires were melted. If they are too far gone to measure use a rope or string to put in place as if its the terminal then measure it and then add enough to that measurement to keep them out and away from the exhaust manifold, a little extra wire is not going to hurt anything and if you need to replace terminal ends in the future you cut off some the odd wire exposed ends and have extra wire on hand to do so. Also if corrosion sets in and you notice it in time before it get to deep in the wire you will be able to cut it off and still have wire to work without having to undue terminal from starter to add another one. I would add an extra foot or so.
