do i need to burp the cooling system on a ford 5.4l. has only minimum heat

Has the cooling system been repaired? Thermostat, hoses, water pump replaced, if it has then most likely it will need it. But the way I gather what you say is the heat from the heater itself is low, now this maybe cause a blend air door is stuck, broken or the servo motor has quit operating.

That vehicle has a degas bottle. Some call it a surge tank. There is a small hose that goes into it from the radiator. that hose or fitting may be plugged. Check the temperature on the heater hoses going in and out of the heater core. Heater core may be plugged.
