battery light stays on and instruments not working

battery light stays on and instruments not working except rev counter works
temporally. speedometer at zero. battery is charging.
What could be the problem.

Nine times out of ten when battery light comes on the alternator is not charging other one percent blown alternator fuse or wiring problem.
