1996 ford escort started knocking and then died. It restarted made it another block then died. It turns over but doesn't start. I need to know where to start looking for the problem.

I would first check and make sure that you have 12 volts at the battery, if not charge the battery. Sounds like you are not getting fuel. With the battery now charged try to start the car, but before you do that get a fuel gauge to check the pressure at the rails before you start it and after if you can gets the car to run. this will be a good starting point...
