1996 nissan altima 2.4l temp guage falls off when on freeway

Asked by Jeff Jan 15, 2017 at 03:38 AM about the 1996 Nissan Altima GXE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The temp guage on my 1996 Nissan Altima 2.4L reaches operating temp
during start and stop driving on cold(winter) days but falls off when freeway
driving. Heater output affected. Is this a thermostat that is stuck open. I've
even got part of the radiator blocked with cardboard. It still happens. Guage
falls to zero.

I would subject the temp sending unit could be defective...

I believe on yours it is next to or on the thermostat housing, thats the large radiator hose goes into.
