this overdrive thing...what is it for and how do you use it

on the parking, reverse, neutral,  drive, options why do I have a 2 and a 1 just underneath...what is it for and how do you use it..

L D N R P,is really the same as 1 2 od n r p some cars have a switch button on shifter push in od is off push again od is on.hope this helps.

Overdrive is used on long, flat drives to increase fuel economy. On hilly terrain it is best not to utilize overdrive as the trans will "hunt" for the correct gear and may overheat more readily.
