When you open the trunk, you will have to pull down the liner along the back of the lights. There may or may not be plastic pins holding it in place (it's been years since i've been in the trunk of a 97 T-Bird lol). Once the liner of out of the way, you should see the wiring for the light running into the back of the exterior light assembly. Again, I cant remember what they look like exactly, but you should be able to turn the socket and the wiring, socket and bulb should come out as one piece. Just be sure you dont crank on the wiring while removing the socket/bulb from the assembly, you dont want to break any wires! In some vehicals, you have to remove the entire light fixture. Some have screws on the back (inside the trunk) that you will need to remove before you can pull the light assembly out, while others have clips that snap into grooves on the body. I'd start in the trunk and go from there.
