ive always used some sort of suction device and empty the reservoir, then fill it with clean fluid and turn the wheel back and forth a few times to circulate the fluid and repeat until the fluid looks clean.

I'm going out on a limb here! My 1981 T-Bird has a steering rack, and even when I change the rack, pump and blow out the lines, I still question whether I got it all out. Over my 32 years of ownership I have changed the rack 3 times, pump twice. I'm still on the road with a 3.3 L. engine.
