Overheated engine

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My dad drove my 2004 Nissan Pathfinder while it
was overheating for roughly 20- 30 miles. Could
there be any major damage to the engine or will it
have to be replaced?

Did any coolant boil out? Did the motor shut itself off? Do you know what caused it to overheat? No cause for panic yet, lots of engines have overheated without any damage.

Yes when I opened up the hood there was a lot of coolant boiling out also some white smoke or steam coming out from around the radiator. Also for about maybe 5 sec the whole car started shaking and then it stopped and continued driving. There was no loss in power that I know of and its in the shop rn but I haven't heard anything about the engine

A check for hydrocarbons in the coolant can indicate if the head/intake gaskets are intact, or better yet a compression test, as that can check the condition of the valves and rings as well. Napa sells a product called 'block tester' that will indicate those hydrocarbons. This still doesn't answer what caused the overheating, hopefully the cause was something simple (and cheap). If it's the water pump tho you might be out some bucks.

It depends, if seems to be running fine and isn't making any bizarre noises it might be ok. A few things you'll want to check is your coolant make sure there's no oil in it and check your oil to make sure there's no coolant in it. If it keeps over heating shut if off right away and you thermostat maybe sticking shut and you have to replace it. But if you have oil in you coolant or vise versa you probably blew a head gasket and the worst thing that could of happened is you could have worped your heads and that's a pretty spendy fix

How can you tell if a gasket is blown? After your electrical heat pipping goes out?
