Hi i have a FORD EXPLORER 4L V6 1997 i it dont want to start we check the fuel pump and spark plugs and thats fine when you start it back fires by the part where the air filter is can it be a valve or timing chain .

Sounds to me that someone did not install the timing belt/chain correctly, firing too early, would have to double back on the repair to put things right.

the van did drove the morning i stopped at a friends house and when i tried to start again it started to do this.

I was quoted from a reputable car mechanic that has been working on my cars and friends cars, I have a coolant leak on my 2013 Ford Explorer deluxe package, he checked it out and said I need a water pump and since he's doing that I should renew the timing chain & belts. Put it in reverse and it reverses. Put it in drive and it goes in drive and thats it/ It won't shift gears.
