In my experience of the whole situation, I started out just for funsies asking the dealership for a quote on replacement. They came back with over $5000 just for the freaking battery! Not including any labor. I purchased a high voltage hybrid battery for my 2017 Fusion from Ebay at a cost of around $2000. This included price of the battery, plus freight, plus core. Doner vehicle was a 2019 with around 35,000 miles on it. (Very important to know the miles the battery has on it if purchasing used.) Most importantly if you are any kind of mechanically inclined you can do a battery swap in around 3 hours yourself. It helps if you do a little internet searching and download the official Ford hybrid battery removal PDF. If you are careful and go step by step, your car will run like its brand new. In addendum, no relearn process is required. Its as easy as changing a few AA's. Save yourself thousands, its a process anyone can do.

Interesting story, Jim..... One thing I'd like to add about buying used hybrid or EV batteries is that not only does condition depend on miles driven and thus recharges the battery has gotten, I'd add the type of recharges. Battery life depend on remaining cool. It's one thing to charge slowly, like overnight in your garage, but those quick charges that take an hour, do damage. Over a few years, with repeated fast charging, the battery can have half its life left compared to one that never saw a rapid charge. And then there's ebay... Nobody ever lied on ebay..... Best of kuck, Ed.

Thank you for that addition Ed! Yes, definitely take the type of charges into consideration if you are trying to replace a Hybrid Energi battery. The Energi is the plug in hybrid variation of the Ford Fusion Hybrid. Keep in mind that the Energi battery is bigger, heavier, with a lot more ducting, fans, and extra cages around it. More work like removing seats and doors is required. Have a plan and friends available if you are attempting the Energi battery. Ebay is definitely ok when you are buying from a reputable seller. I bought my high voltage battery from a small auto recycler/salvage/ parts seller. They were very professional and worked with me over the phone to set up freight charges and cores. They even were honest with me and refunded my core charge because it was cheaper for me to keep the core. Shout out to St. James Auto Parts MO! Great luck on your repairs!

It is not a good idea for the average person to try to replace the high voltage battery in a hybrid themselves! They can literally kill you if not handled properly!! The price you were quoted in pretty standard which is why today's hybrids and electric vehicles will hit the junkyard before they're very old! This is the part that nobody wants to tell you about them!! Unless you're a certified professional technician who knows how to do this job, please don't try it on your own!! Be safe!! Jim

Thanks for your concern James! As someone who asks a lot of questions and researches a mechanical topic extensively (Using actual Ford certified removal literature), you can do it yourself. I, and plenty of other people who are mechanically inclined are not interested in paying well over $5000 for a job in which professional technicians are going to follow the exact same literature and charge a premium for it. My vehicle has over 165,000 miles on it and was definitely due for a new battery, which has been marked for power declination at 150,000. The car is now good for another 100,000 miles. Yes, you are right that the batteries are dangerous if handled improperly. This is why research and good instructions are required. You can then decide if you are up to DIY it, or not and pay over five grand. Like James said people, Be safe!
