Rough idle, flames from exhaust

Asked by Will Oct 25, 2016 at 10:38 AM about the 1994 Mitsubishi 3000GT SL FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently replaced the motor in my 3000gt after a
mechanic said I bent 8 valves in the orginal motor.
After dropping the motor in, making sure that
everything was hooked up (minus the egr valve and
sensor that is not on this motor) I got her started
but she back fires and runs rough. While working
on it the other night the wife said that she seen a
glow coming from the exhaust when I revved it,
looking for myself I noticed a 6inch flame shooting
out of the exhaust and both cats glowing bright.
What could be causing this? How can I fix it?

It sounds like the ignition timing is way off.
