Ball joints seem OK took right front wheel off -got a grinding/scraping sound coming from what sounds like axel/trans area (with no load)

Possibly but them normally make a clunking sound when turning at slow speed.

Possibly. My vr4 and my sons sl where both making noises in the front end. Roring sounds kinda. Replace all our front wheel bearing and the noises stopped. Might try taking your car for a few mile drive. Five or so. When you get back home remove the front wheels and feel around the hub next to you axle nut. If it's warm or hot it's your bearings going bad.
