Safe to drive?

Stuck with a car that has a over tightened top nut shock/strut assembly at the
front, the nut that holds the shock to the bearing mount. The over torqued nut
tore threads, it won't loosen but it has a 1/4 inch of play in it, shock moves up
and down in mount. Need it as a work car, safe to drive?

You can drive it, but would need to get fixed asap. as it will wear into the mount causing more damage.
You may be able to rethread the bad section with a next size smaller dye tap. If you can add some more weight to the front end then you can remove the nut without disturbing the strut shaft from coming out of the mount. Then you may be able to run a dye over the bad threads and make new ones or clean up the old damaged threads. You may want to have a qualified mechanic do this. As Rowefast mentioned not fixing will cause more damage. this method will work if you have enough room to run the dye down past the damaged threads. Other than that you should replace the strut altogether. Hope this helps!
