how do i get the montero out of 4wd low

cold and 3 inches of snow on the ground.  My son did not have the vehicle in low, but came out this morning to find the vehicle in in low.  He tried shifting but it will not respond.  How does he get it out of low and back into high.

try backing up several feet and firmly set the brakes just might release the internal mech.This used to be a common requirement on older vaccum control transfer cases.Also the vaccum hose that controls the front axel lock is visable from the front of truck ,make sure they are not dissconnected
