How do I diagnose why Lancer is sputtering , and engine service light is on.

My 2003 Lancer is sputtering when backing up or taking off. Engine light is
on now. Over 200K on the mileage. Any ideas what could be the problem? I
really don't want to pay the High price from an Auto mechanic.

You can take the car to AutoZone or Advanced Auto Parts and they can plug in an error code scanner and see why the Check Engine light is on. Most will do this for no charge.
