Indicator stalk

Hi guys. I'm hoping you can help me. I have a 2003
mini cooper. Everytime I indicate right the beams
come on. I was told it was the indicator stalk.  So I
brought and replaced it today.  But still it's  doing
the same thing. I've been told it could be a bad
earth wire, hence the beams coming on. My
question is does this sound right and where would
this earth wire be ? Thanks all....
