Engine rattling sound in 99 Mercury Sable sohc 3.0

Asked by GuruRVB85 Feb 05, 2020 at 06:16 PM about the 1999 Mercury Sable LS Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I start the car it constantly sounds like marbles rattling around in the bottom of the engine while at idle. I haven't checked the converter heat shield yet, but I was thinking maybe the timing belt or tensioner might be worn. Any ideas?

Yes, also check the idler pulley or belt tensioner. Remove the serpentine belt and spin the pulley's by hand to see if they are crunchy, spin very freely and or make noise. If they never were replaced, your due.
