Battery Light Flashing Mercury Mystique

Hi all, I drive a 1999 Mercury Mystique and in heavy rains, the battery light
flashes on and off, causing me to lose power steering. It does not happen in
light rain or in dry conditions. Any thoughts as to how to fix this issue?
