Mercury mountaineer

I was driving my 2000 mercury mountaineer and it
started smoking I pulled over and there was oil
everywhere and it had a strong fumes smell like
propane or gas some kind of fumes. Can you tell
me what the problem is?

The oil coming out could be from various sources. The smell could have been from oil on your exhaust. DO NOT drive it or start till fix source of leak or you could (sorry to say you may have already) ruin engine. Wish you well!

If there were no strange noises when the oil started leaking,check the oil filter to see if it came apart or if there are 2 gaskets between it and the engine. There should be only gasket. If there were odd noises when the oil started leaking the engine could have gone bad.
