Will synthetic oil improve gas mileage?

Asked by Bryan_Connolly_63 Apr 04, 2016 at 01:53 AM about the 2003 Mercury Sable LS Premium Wagon FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2003 Mercury Sable 3.8 V-6. Gets about 16 mpg in the city and about 20 mpg on the freeway. Will synthetic oil improve gas mileage? Thanks, Bryan Connolly guitarbryan@sbcglobal.net

The improvement is very slight and probably not noticeable. Run a named brand oil at the manufacturer's recommend grade and change it as the manufacturer recommends. Tire pressure will affect fuel mileage more than anything else in a properly tuned vehicle.
