2003 mercury sable axle nut issue

Asked by pjkilby Feb 12, 2023 at 10:27 PM about the 2003 Mercury Sable LS Premium Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

axle nut will not go back on. when changing the wheel bearing the old one didnt
want to come off and when it was removed the end of the axle got slightly
damaged. would I be able to use a small Dremel grinder to shave a little of the
edge of the end to be able to get the nut on to the threads so it can be put back
together?

This sounds like someone beat on the end of the axle shaft to get it loose from the spindle instead of using the right tool. So as long as the shaft itself didn’t mushroom into the threads then yes you can grind some of it, but if the threads are damaged then you need to replace the that stub portion of the axle or the complete unit.

Get a small triangle file and clean the threads up , otherwise you'll have to replace the half shaft . Did king kong help you on this ?
