The battery light can be triggered by a bad alternator. You need to check to see if the alternator Is charging the battery (should raise voltage to 13.0 - 13.5 volts when the engine is running above idle).

A battery light always means a charging issue, not a battery problem. With the engine running, probe the battery. Are you getting 14V? If anything lower than 13V I would suspect the alternator is starting to fail. How is your serpentine belt? Sometimes if a pulley is not spinning freely or the belt tensioner is loose, the belt is not properly riding over the alternator.
