Whats wrong with my 1996 Protege, it idles great but dies when i push the gas

My car wants to totally cut out when I push the gas to drive it. Whats wrong ?

I would replace the fuel filter first. With the filter removed check the gasoline that is in the filter for water. If the gas has water in it add a water remover product "any brand" or alcohol. If the filter doesn't solve the problem the fuel pump may be functioning, weak.
