Air filter removal?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have my dash apart replacing the stereo and I found a filter behind the glove box. I'm assuming it's an air filter. It falls apart to the touch. I can't find any information on it, so here i am. It looks difficult to remove. It's not just a pop in and out thing like i have seen on newer cars. Can anyone help?

What you probably found is a twenty-one year old cabin air filter. Even if you can't get a replacement, I would remove it piece by piece or clean it out with a shop vac so it doesn't clog your heater/AC air flow.
