Why would my brake lights stop working?

It could be a blown fuse, a bad brake light switch, a bad turn signal switch or bad wiring. Check fuses first, brake lite switch is mounted on the top of the brake pedal you can check it and the other stuff with a test lite. Do you have a test lite?
