2001 Mazda MPV 160,000 miles runs perfectly, oil light on, mechanic says replace engine

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Mazda MPV minivan, 160,000 miles.  It runs perfectly.
Starting this morning, my oil light comes on when I brake, and goes off
when I accelerate.  It did this before the last oil change too (a couple weeks
ago).  My mechanic says it has plenty of oil, and the oil sensor seems to be
fine, and they recommend a new $7000 engine and say it is unsafe to drive
because the engine is going to suddenly die.  But it seems to be running
perfectly.  Might there be some simpler explanation, and a possible fix?

I hope you found a different mechanic. I have had the same problem and my tech said that those sensors go bad sometimes and the at some point I need to replace it but if I want to wait I should just make sure my oil level is fine and the engine is not running hot. I will get the 145$ sensor replaced tomorrow, Hope you got the problem resolved! :-) Chris
