driver door wont unlock and handle broken

Asked by Katey_ann101 Mar 10, 2015 at 07:33 PM about the 1998 Ford Explorer 4 Dr Eddie Bauer AWD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I went to open my door to get out for work the one day and my driver side door handle on
the inside broke. I was already having previous issues with the keypad not unlocking that
door so it had to be open from the inside. Now it wont unlock from the inside or out and
the handle is broken so I cannot get my driver door open.

Are you having problems with the electrical system to the door or the mechanical system, or both. When you pull on the handle inside, is there a resistance or does it just flop around? Is there resistance on the outside? You will have to get into the inside of the door to replace any parts. If the mechanical parts of the system are ok, and just an electrical problem, use a slim jim down through the glass to unlock the car. If you have never used one, call pop-a-lock to open the door to effect repairs.
