I have a 1998 Expedition and I hear a clunking noise in the rear of the vehicle when I put the vehicle in drive, in reverse, and when I accelerate quickly from a standstill. My mechanic was unable to diagnose the problem.

Sounds like universal joints. I know sometimes u joints may not look bad just by looking at them but that is the problem. It's only when they are at the point of getting ready to fall out that you can see they need replacing.
