2018 Subaru Crosstrek break pad and rotor replacement

Asked by Jmalexander Sep 04, 2020 at 07:53 AM about the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently repacked the rear pads and rotors
on the noted vehicle with zero issues.  The
following day, I did the same on the fronts
with no issues until I went to test drive the
vehicle. The vehicle will not move!  Feels like
breaks are on.  Pedal is inconsistently firm.
Disassembled and reassembled multiple
times and can’t identify any mechanical bind.
Dealer claims there is an electrical safety
override that is activated.  Anyone ever heard
of this?  How can a backyard mechanic reset
the override?

That's a new one to me. When you jack up the car do all 4 wheels turn by hand freely? Did you remove any ABS sensor wires? Do you have a CEL on?

I did the brake and rotor replacement at home so had to do one wheel at a time. The rears, which I did first and test drove perfectly, spun freely prior to remounting the tires. The fronts never spun freely, even when placing the car in neutral. I did not find this odd considering that its an AWD vehicle. I saw no sensors on the calipers, nor are they identified in any youtube demos of the same repair....NO CELs! I am certianly no expert but have performed this same replacement successfully, probably, 50-75 times, on various vehicles over the years...even on my M-B ML350. I am baffled!
