Four wheel high is what you use traveling threw snow and light mud. You need the four wheel low when you are really stuck in like sand or mud.

Four high for snow on the road. I would only use four low in deep snow or off road.

I have a 2004 ford expedition 4x4, I bought used in 2011, love the AWD, but never have used the 4L 4H, options, I live in Oklahoma & only use the AWD in rain/snow/ice & on the sandy beaches when I go to the Ocean.
