Noisy Brakes

Today for the first time I heard a screaching noise when I applied the brakes at a stop light, we have been having a lot of windy days and sand blowing here, is it possible to try and flush the brake pad/rotor area with water to see if it's just sand, or is it more likely I need new brakes? I have less than 127 thousand miles on it, and had a brake job less than 2 years ago, but I can't find the receipt, I am a disabled Combat Veteran, and do not drive but to the doctor or store, estimate less than 6000 miles the past year or so. Thank you

it is possible for it to be sand or your pads could be low the best way would be for you to pull the tire off but you mentioned you are disabled so that might not be a option unless you have a helpful neighbor hosing off your brakes would not be a problem at all but the clearance between the brake pad and rotor is very thin so it may not have any effect however run your hand accross the face of the rotor it should be as smooth as glass if you feel pits or scores in the rotor take it to your mechanic as something is wrong ether sand in the pad or just normal wear from the pads
