'98 ESCORT ZX2 COOLING FAN NOT WORKING

Asked by LJW1961 Apr 26, 2014 at 07:39 AM about the 1998 Ford Escort 2 Dr ZX2 Hot Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

RECENTLY PURCHASED CAR - cooling fan was not working , I disconnected wire from sensor in block to keep fan running all the time to avoid overheating. Replaced switch and fan still does not operate, I removed switch from block and with wire connected I heated tip of switch w/ cig lighter and fan came on, then cooled it w/ wet rag and turned off, I did this couple of times and seemed to work properly.I put switch back in block and temp on gage went a little over 1/2 way but fan did not come on.I am going to flush radiator and replace thermostat but concerned fan will still not work

No. the PCM determines when to turn on the cooling fan via the ECT. It has to be nearly 3/4 of the way to hot. Does the fan come on when the AC is on? Ford recommends running the engine at 2500 - 3000 RPM for 3 minutes to thoroughly warm an engine. Since a vehicle rarely requires a cooling fan while in motion, the fan isn't designed to run constantly, is designed to pull a large quantity of air for a short period of time, and will cool the engine sufficiently once engaged.

Ccrm (constant control relay module) the 16-24 pin electrical box under air filter was the cause of my radiator fan not working, or my a.c. compressor kicking on

the cooling fan solenoid & its wire harness is located between the 2 fans! I have a 03 zetec focus w/new head temp sensor, new fan solenoid, I tested both fans by running my own fused 12-15amp power & grounded the other terminal & each fan ran when I ran power to them, I changed the relays, checked fuses & stil no fans! either I didn't remove enough of the burnt wire when replacing the fan solenoid or I just need new fans? might be that the low speed is burnt on the fan? I am frustrated & when I ran power to fan, it ran so idk if I need new fan or electrical short??? the car doesn't overheat & gauge stays in the middle but a zetec will destroy the rod bearings if ran hot! not to hard to fix but cost $100-200 for main & rod bearings, upper & lower oil pan gaskets, oil & filter & 2 quarts of trans fluid because the axle needs removed to drop the upper oil pan & some trans fluid will escape when axle is removed. hurry & plug the axle hole!!! I post answer's tho, my focus has cooling fan issue rite now! might just need new fan? I am purchasing a cooling fan controller until payday when I get new fans!!!
