99 taraus when i stop it seems like the idle drops and it feels like the tran goes into neutral and when i start to go i give it gas and it slams into gear and from there on it works ok until i stop again.

Agreed. Low fluid level or worn out internal seals. Sounds like it needs to build hydraulic pressure before it will engage.
