96 Jeep Cherokee

Asked by DonZuck Apr 19, 2016 at 04:09 PM about the 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4-Door 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My friend has a 96 Jeep Cherokee he just
bought for $100. When you start it up you
have to shut it off immediately. It starts
but acts as if the accelerator is floored.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
Thank you for any help you may give.

Sounds like the Air Idle Control Valve is unplugged, or leaking vacuum.

Thank you. I'll let you know what problem was once it's fixed. It's over our heads so he is taking it in to get fixed.

My friend got his Cherokee back. They said that the intake manifold gasket was messed up and that some of the bolts were missing. I would have thought that it wouldn't have started. Why would that make it rev up like it was floored? Hope this makes sense to you. I used to work on the older stuff and still do brakes and small things but motors, tranny for get it. I'll stick to plumbing, been doing that for 40 yrs.

That makes sense as the computer is supplying more gas threw the injectors, cause the 02 sensor was reading a lean condition telling the computer it needs more gas to try and keep the air/fuel mixture at a 14.7% optimum mixture. Its like adding oxygen to a fire. It is the throttle body that is designed to be able to supply the right amount a air flow to mix with the fuel. Any other source of vacuum screws that up.
