It depends on how long it has been since the fluid has been changed and how often it has been . I know I have seen fluid/filter changes on high. Milage vehicles (100k+) that have not been regularly serviced result in transmission failure. If this is the case for your vehicle.I would try just changing the filter and the fluid in the pan. Drive for a few hundred miles (give or take) then doing it again. (2-3 times depending on the how long the vehicle has gone without the tranny being serviced)

I haven't changed the trans fluid ever since I had my car but the fluid is still nice and red not gunky at all so when i go for an oil change i will have one the mechanics to do that for me and thanks for both answers
