1998 Jeep Wrangler

Asked by Scotty1378 Dec 21, 2014 at 07:34 PM about the 1998 Jeep Wrangler Sport

Question type: General

Hi all....I just purchased a 1998 Wrangler Spor (80,000 mlies)t in Arizona and drove it back to Missouri. It has the 4.0 straight six, 3-speed auto with a 3:73 rear end. Almost immediately into my 1400  mile journey, I was concerned about the engine RPM. At 65 MPH it was taching around 3,400 RPM. Obviously, this was due to the gear ratio. I called my local Jeep dealership in Missouri and talked to the service manager. He didn't seem terribly knowledgeable, but thought that was somewhat high. I guess my question is, although this is geared for the city (and the 4.0 six is pretty tough), could I have harmed the engine with this kind of trip or am I "OK" ? The Jeep seemed fine with it, but I guess I'm just used to the 2200-2500 lower rpm of a V8. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks.....Kent

you have no problems what so ever.. well other than having 3 spd trans with 373 rear end... it is simply not made for hwy speeds. the engine is tough enough to keep running.
