Would like to know if a body control module from a
1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee part number 56041206
work on 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee body control
module 56042409AE

No, when it comes to modules (or any part of a wire harness) you want the part numbers to be exactly the same. There are likely differences between those two jeeps or those two years that make the BCMs incompatible.

Some can be, but only to factory specs, and they're often not backwards compatible. Any place that has an interchange guide, like a salvage yard, might be able to tell you if they're interchangeable.
