if this is a Quadratic vehicle then something is really messed up as the transfer case is suppose to send power to the axle with traction. Now as far as reverse only when on jack stands: this sounds like the transmission has a problem with either the reverse servo or the reverse drum and band assembly, probably just worn out so when a load is applied it just slips. What color is the transmission fluid? if it dark then for sure you have a transmission problem.
