The six cylinder for that year (if you have a 6) was available in two versions. The 4.0 pushrod and the 4.0 OHC. To distinguish look at the VIN you'll either find the code X or M. Different procedures for each. Haynes book for 1999 explorer will go into specific instructions for both engines. Including the V8 if you happen to have that one.
