Shift cable issue? adjuster popped open and slid? There is a fix for that. The older ones, we would add a tie strap, and add a small hole to pass it through, but the age of yours could indicate it is worn, broken, bent part. You access one end below the instrument panel, and the other at the driver's side of the trans.
